Welcome to the first blog of "The Nightclub", the show hosted by Linda and Eddie Kennedy, on Valley Free Radio every Saturday night ( unless we know different, and then, if we do, we'll tell you on here, or on Match of The Day The USA Way" or "The Late English Breakfast" !! )
It's a show that broadcasts on Valley Free Radio, a low powered FM station, in the Pioneer Valley in Massachusetts, USA. It starts at 8pm and finishes usually at 10pm, though, we have been known to go on longer! We have a website also, www.myspace.co/thenightclubwithlindaandeddie It is a show that caters for the more mature, discerning music lover. Our trailer says that we play everything from "Sinatra to the Stones", and that's a pretty good desription. Our show refelects our musical tastes, well, when we play our own music, it would, wouldn't it??!!
Our show is not like your typical American radio show. Since I have been here, I have noticed that presenters play several tracks and then tell you what they have played. Our response to that is "computer says nahh!" ( we are fans of Stephanie Miller ! ) In what we feel is doing our bit to follow the remit of Valley Free Radio, we like to be different. We'll play a song then talk about it, maybe two in a row, but that's as far as we'll go. We believe that if you are presenting a radio show, even on a little, low powered F.M. station like ours, presentation is key. Everybody who listens to a radio show does show for two reasons - the content and the presenter. We go out of our way to make sure we are entertaining and educational.
As I alluded to earlier, our tastes are varied. Certain artistes, however, feature prominently in our collection. Simply Red ( the band that brought Linda and I together - more about that in a future blog ) The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Johnny Cash - acts that have featured on what we like to call our "Tribute Night" specials we do from time to time.
This Saturday for example, we are doing a Stones night. Johnny Cash is looming in that wonderfully moody, menacing yet magnificent way as only he can. We'll be doing our appreciation of the 80's and 90's ( we've done a 60's night and a 70's night ). On December 1st we'll be doing a jazz and blues night, with, we hope, live music from our friend Ellen Cogen along with Joe Lacreta ( check the website for details - it'll be up there when we know, trust me! ) We've also, and I mustn't forget this, featured music from Linda's eldest daughter Jennifer, a talented musician in her own right ( she does a great job on Linda's hair as well ! )
It must make you wonder how we got involved. Well, not long after I arrived in this country ( a year tomorrow ) I needed something to keep me occupied whilst enduring my long drawn out battle with the USCIS. I got involved with VFR first and foremost doing an afternoon show on the third Monday of the month, specialising in British music, comedy and chat. Then, thanks to a kind man called Eric, I heard that there was a guy called Dave who did a show on Saturday nights called "The #1 Show". I was told he was getting bored with the idea of doing it every single Saturday. Would I like to share the slot of 8pm-10pm? Is the Pope a catholic??!!
Until recently, my wife and I lived very close to the station. It seemed silly to me for me to be on my own doing the show and Linda being on her own listening to me. Why didn't she come along? Linda agreed, saying she'd type the playlist out. Not long after we started doing the show, the husband and wife dream team of local radio was born!
We both enjoy the show immensely. It comes out in what we do and the way we present the music. Having said that, we do take a great deal of pride in what we know from a technical point of view to make sure we put out as professional-sounding a show as we can.
For as long as the station is on the air, we'll continue to have fun doing the radio show on Saturday nights. The station's website is www.valleyfreeradio.org. There's a pledge-drive next week. Once again, our website is www.myspace.com/thenightclubwithlindaandededie If you live in The Pioneer Valley here in Massachussetts try to catch us on the air on Saturday nights from 8pm to 10pm.
In future blogs, we'll talk about how the previous show went and what our plans are for the show in terms of the following week and ideas we might have for forthcoming shows.
Thankyou for reading this and remember "Laughter is the music of the heart"
Saturday nights, 8pm-10pm: be there or we want a note from your Mum!"
Adios until the next time,
Eddie Kennedy ( co-presenter of "The Nightclub" )
